San Diego Proudly Presents - Comic-Con 2008!
From July 24th-27th comic book and movie fans alike will make their way to glorious San Diego for the world famous Comic-Con event. The four day convention prides itself on providing an extensive look at the comic book world. For me, the big draw is the movie related stuff. Most of the major film studios will be on hand to generate buzz on their upcoming film slates. With the four day schedule finally revealed, we now know what to expect. Of course, there's always surprises at Comic-Con. Fans can always expect special screenings of upcoming movies. At the moment, it has been confirmed that the con will present a special work in progress screening of Mutant Chronicles starring Thomas Jane and Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman. Also on tap, a showing of the upcoming road movie Sex Drive starring James Marsden. The rumor mill is buzzing that Seth Rogen and crew will be on hand to present a special showing of the "pot head witnesses a hit" opus The Pineapple Express, while Ben Stiller may just show up with Jack Black
and Robert Downey Jr. to deliver Tropic Thunder to the geek community. Other film screeings being whispered about include the Star Wars inspired tale of friendship saga Fanboys, a movie that's been sitting on a shelf for what feels like an eternity. On the horror front? Well, a genre fan like me can only hope for screenings of Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train, Alexandre Aja's Mirrors, and the long delayed Michael Dougherty anthology flick Trick R' Treat. I wont hold my breath but there's certainly nothing wrong with a little prayer. For the time being, the events that are confirmed are enough to make any film, comic, and t.v. enthusiast weak in the knees. Just looking at this schedule is incredibly exhausting, but I for one can't wait to get down to San Diego and sink my teath into all the genre goodness. High on my excitement list? Presentations for The Watchman, Lost, 24, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (with director Kevin Smith doing one of his insightful ninety minute conversations), Masters of the Web (featuring Robert Sanchez of iesb.net, Eric Vespe of aint-it-coo-news.com, Garth Franklin of darkhorizons.com, Devin Faraci of chud.com, Mike Sampson of joblo.com, and Brad Miska of bloody-disgusting.com--no, yours truly is not part of the panel. Give me another ten years), 20th Century Fox (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Max Payne), Disney (Bolt, Up), Terminator: Salvation, Spaced (With Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg in attendance), The Hobbit, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Ghostbusters the Game, The Wolfman, Red Sonja (with Robert Rodriguez in attendance), Family Guy, Lost Boys 2: The Tribe (yes, this straight to DVD flick looks like shit, but the geek in me desparately want it to be good), The Spirit, and much, much, more. If you're a great big movie geek like me, Comic-Con is a must. You have to experience it at least once in your life. As usual, we'll be on hand to deliver extensive reports on the event so be sure to check back for coverage late next week. In the meantime, here's a look at the entire Comic-Con 2008 line-up straight from comic-con.org. It's a bit overwhelming to be sure, but in a good way. See you at the con!
