From the minds behind Reno 911 comes a ridiculous tale of a former Olympic ping pong contender who is given the opportunity to compete in an underground ping pong tournament, while spying on a notorious crime lord (Christopher Walken), who also so happens to be responsible for the death of our hero's father. As you might expect Walken takes advantage of his strange deadpan comic skills to give us a memorable performance. Our main character (stage actor Dan Fogler) uses crackerjack ping pong skills and a little help from the FBI (George Lopez) and the worlds greatest ping pong coach (a blind James Hong) to undo Walkens crime ring with a slapstick action extravaganza at the end. I must also give mention of the borrowed plot points from Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport.

The film written by 911ers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (who directs) gets a lot of it's comic punch by a wealth of inspired walk-on cameos – Patton Oswald, Masi Oka, Deidrich Bader, David Koechner, Brian Posehn, Jason Scott Lee, Jim Lampley among others. In a role generally peopled by Adam Sandler or Owen Wilson, Fogler doesn't exactly take comedy to a new level, but he manages to carry the film with chops that remind of Jack Black and Sam Kinison. His love hate relationship with Maggie Q isn't altogether convincing, but a comedy this broad and scattershot hardly depends on it. Lennon and Garant are playing a comedic numbers game here and if one joke fizzles the next is apt to knick the edge of the table and the next an overhand slam in the throat. Walken's singular presence lends the comedy a legitimacy it might not otherwise have had and combined with a hilarious Hong, a surprisingly strong Lopez and a quirky Lennon there is plenty to laugh about here.

Garant and Lennon are up and coming screenwriters in the vein of Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahms and despite the presence of some of the more banal jokes like the title of the film and other genital-related humor, it really is a fun ride. If you're looking for an inventive, intelligent comedy go see Knocked Up again. If you're looking for a laugh a minute, check-your-brain-at-the-door good time - Balls of Fury is a pretty good kick.
