Sony Pictures ponied up an obscene amount of money for the exclusive rights to rehearsal footage that was shot for Michael Jackson's massive 2009 world tour. Following Jackson's unexpected (and tragic) passing, High School Musical director (and frequent Michael Jackson collaborator) Kenny Ortega would sift through hours of rehearsal footage to culminate this final look at one of the music world's biggest icons. What we the the audience are witness to is not only a glimpse into what could have quite possibly been one of the biggest tours ever mounted, but an intimate look at the intense work ethic and stunning creative process of a talented musician whose art was ultimately eclipsed by his seemingly odd off stage behavior. This Is It isn't at all interested in sensationalizing Jackson's life nor does it dwell on his unfortunate passing. Instead, the film delves into the music because that's what this unforgettable talent will always be remembered for. This Is It is a bit of a rush job, and it does get a little preachy, particularly during a mid section environmental message piece, but in the end this is a celebration of an extremely talented individual who left us far too early.
