I've seen some great comedies this year. Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Hamlet II, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Burn After Reading, etc. After careful consideration though, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Role Models is my favorite comedy of the year. Sure, it might not be as clever, insightful, or shrewd as the previously mentioned films, but it is the most consistently funny. When I wasn't laughing, I was smiling. What more can you ask from a comedy.

In Role Models, Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott play a couple of energy drink marketing men who, after Rudd's character does something insanely stupid, opt to serve as big brother types to troubled kids at a youth center to avoid doing jail time.

Yes, Role Models sounds like a processed, gimmicky, generic comedy that couldn't possibly work, but the game cast and the rapid fire jokes take the stupid plot to a higher level. What's more, this dopey, irreverent, crude comedy has a great big heart.

Director David Wain has a natural gift for comedy and he's created a perfect environment for his hilarious cast to do their thing, but he's also incredibly adept at visual story telling. The climax of this picture is a riot. I don't want to give too much away, but it sort of plays like a fusion of Lord of the Rings and Kiss Meets the Phantom. Funny, funny stuff.

The screenplay was co-written by Paul Rudd and it's clear that a little bit of that old Judd Apatow magic has rubbed off on him. Rudd the performer continues to mature with each passing film. He even manages to take this rather smug, selfish character and makes him completely likable. Mostly though, he just brings the funny.

The supporting cast all bring their winning blend of comical talent to the table. Sean William Scott is hilarious and the relationship that bonds between he and little foul mouth Bobb'e T. Thompson, is warm and sweet. Watch as Scott teaches Thompson the origins of the Kiss song Love Gun, or witness his brilliant "booby" speech. This is raunchy but hilarious stuff. Christopher Mintz-Plass, who won nerd hearts over with his turn as McLovin in Superbad, is even more engaging in this film. While he doesn't completely leave his comfort zone, he does create an entirely new character here. He's a lot of fun and his work with Rudd is fantastic. The "Whispering Eye" bit is hysterical. Elizabeth Banks, fresh off roles in Zack and Miri Make a Porno and W., is appealing as Rudd's girlfriend. It's a small role, but she makes the most of it. Of the supporting players, it's Jane Lynch who had me laughing the hardest as a an ex-junkie turned youth center director. Her comic timing is impeccable and after watching her in this picture, you'll never look at a bagel dog the same way again.

Simply put, Role Models is full of funny people in funny situations saying funny things. You can tell the entire cast had an absolute blast making this movie. That infectious spirit jumps right off the screen. I sat through Role Models twice in two days, and quite frankly, I can't wait to see it again.
