Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is back (sort of) and this time he has a bone to pick with the United States health care system. Didn't Michael Moore already deal with this issue in Sicko? Perhaps, but his methods were child's play compared to the methods used by the sicko in this film. Saw VI is a tired movie. In fact, the whole franchise is pretty damn tired. I have no problem with the torture porn genre. I have no problem with gore in general. The problem is, this is a really boring movie. Even the gore is of the "go through the motions" variety. Saw VI lacks tension. Even when potential victims are about to be put through one of Jigsaw's twisted tests, there's nothing really worth getting worked up over. Furthermore, there aren't any characters worth giving a crap about. There is a bit of an unexpected revelation involving a mother and son, and director Kevin Greutert gets a little mileage out his goofy stab at health care, but neither of these attributes elevate the stale material. There isn't even a sufficiently interesting twist ending. Just a boring set up that suggests that Saw will go on forever. And in fact, while at Comic-Con, I bumped into Saw VI scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston (they were there promoting a film called The Collector) and they informed me that not only is Saw VII on track for Halloween 2010, but that it'll be in 3-D. Joy.
