2009 has produced a few laugh worthy films (The Hangover comes to mind) and the newest film from producers Andy Mackay and Will Farrell delivers on the basis of dumbed down laughs. And it also offends.
Enter Selleck Car Sales in sunny Temecula, California where times are in a slump, no help from a lackluster sales team including the gullible character played by a funny Ken Jeong (who was also funny in the Hangover) and a racist old grump played by Russ Meyer veteran Charles Napier. The dealership owner (James Brolin) finds that maybe some outside help can save things without selling out to a competitor (Alan Thicke) and his son (the Office's Ed Helms) who is also Brolin's future son in law. Oh the drama.
Help comes in the form of legendary car salesman Don Ready (Jeremy Piven, channeling his energy from TV's Entourage) and his pals Jibby (an over the top melencholy Ving Rhames) as well as David Koechner and Katharine Hahn. Their tactics prove successful in jumpstarting sales and moving (including pushing) cars from the lot. This of course is threatened by some plot twisting in forms of Don's relationship problems(and a possible son) Katherine Hahn attempting to seduce a 10 year old that looks like a full grown man( only good for so many jokes) and Ed Helms desire to lead a boy/man band( a source of a funny musical number) and there are James Brolin's advances that David Koechner has to fend off. In the end a few people learn their lessons and Will Farrell will have made you laugh in two scenes. Oh and Ving Rhames will have treated you to some heartfelt vocal stylings.
And watch for the DJ character. Just don't try to make any requests.
