2009 has been a fairly weak year for comedies. While Zombieland (which was initially concieved as a t.v. series) bills itself as an apocalyptic slice of undead horror, it actually works better as a balls to the wall comedy thanks mostly to sublime comedic efforts by a hilarious Woody Harrelson as fearless zombie killer Tallahasse and neurotic Jesse Eisenberg as nerdy Columbus (a sort of fusion of Michael Cera and Woody Allen). Also along for the ride are Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as siblings who take a liking to a most unlikely dynamic duo. Director Ruben Fleischer has a great sense of style (the opening credits are classic and the amusement park climax bristles with creativity) and while Zombieland isn't particularly scary, it is laugh out loud hilarious. Furthermore, Zombieland offers up the cameo to end all cameos. Don't worry. No spoilers in this review. This flick is far smarter than one might expect and while it isn't as cheeky or clever as Edgar Wright's brilliant Romero homage piece Shaun of the Dead, its one hell of a grand entertainment nevertheless. Nut up or shut up in deed!
