Don't call it a reunion anymore boys and girls. When they've just put out their second album in a three year span, I think you can officially say that Dinosaur Jr., one of the greatest and most influential bands of the Grunge era is back with a vengeance. Not only did their 2007 album Beyond mark the first appearance of the original lineup of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph since 1988's Bug, but it also turned out to be one of the very best albums of that year. Farm is the quick follow-up and it shows that Beyond was no fluke. Mascis, Barlow and Murph are going through a career renaissance and all of us are benefactors of their resurgence.
Picking up right where Beyond left off, Farm is full of blistering guitar solos by Mascis that will pleasurably melt fans' faces off with glee. Barlow and Murph still are still the best cogs that Mascis have ever had to make his wheels spin though and without their backbeat, Mascis would still be stuck making uninspired solo albums. Whether it's barnburners like "Over It" or "There's No Here," or playful ditties like "See You," Mascis sounds like he's having the time of his life. Barlow also contributes two songs here as well, the heavy and brooding "Your Weather" and the bass heavy album closer "Imagination Blind." As long as Mascis is willing to share the stage (and mic) with Barlow, this should hopefully be a happy reconciliation period that leads to more future classic albums for years to come.
