Every new Electronic album that the DFA label puts out always seems to be overly hyped and the debut record by Hercules and Love Affair is no different. The hype is well deserved though because DJ Andrew Butler has crafted a great 70's influenced Disco-Pop gem that will surely keep the dance floors packed this summer.
Light and airy Disco beats and top-notch production certainly does help, but where Hercules and Love Affair works so well is the guest vocals of Antony Hegarty from Antony & The Johnsons on over half of the album. Antony's overly dramatic vocals are a match made in heaven for Butler's beats and first single "You Belong" will definitely inspire you to shake your moneymaker. Even on darker tunes like the brooding "Easy" that are more moody and not so Dance inspired, Hegarty's voice is so powerful and versatile that he can transition easily (no pun intended) between the two different styles. Even tracks that Antony isn't involved in like "Hercules Theme" which seems very Boy George inspired are a delight. Overall, Hercules and Love Affair is an above average debut from a promising new talent and it will be exciting to see where Butler goes from here.
