Newest UK export Kasabian are yet another also ran in the great race of bands that they sound similar to, but not as good as. First track and newest single "Club Foot" tries desperately to bowl you over with its snappy bass line and overly frantic vocals, but this isn't anything new to people who are even remotely familiar with Mani's bass playing with The Stones Roses, or Bobby Gillespie's vocals from Primal Scream (or Mani's bass playing from Primal Scream for that matter). Second track, "Processed Beats," shamelessly apes Shaun Ryder and his old Manchester mates Happy Mondays right down to the dance oriented drug rock and Ryder's distinct delivery. It also doesn't help that they rely on lines like "I drive beats from this processed meat" to get a party started. While I'm on the subject of meat, yet another unoriginal tune comes in the form of "Butcher Blues," a track in which the bass lines and keyboards are so similar sounding to something like Air's Moon Safari, that Godin & Dunckel would not be unjustified in pursuing copyright infringement.
The rest of this self-titled debut is produced so safely, that it comes off sounding uninspiring rather than just something that's pleasant and familiar. Kasabian might trick a new generation of listeners into thinking that they're Brit-rock's newest sliced bread, but old hats that have enjoyed the above bands for years will find these newbies second rate at best.
