The first album by the comely Australian country songstress The Captain, proved that miss Chambers was a talent to be reckoned with. But with her sophomore release, Barricades and Brick Walls, Kasey proves that she can not only sing her heart out, but can write a hell of a song as well. This album showcases her gritty and often piercing vocals (a.l.a. Emmy Lou Harris, Victoria Williams) the striking in-your-face production of her brother Nash, and the killer chops of her father Bill Chambers. And also features a host of Australian luminaries including Paul Kelly, Matthew Ryan and the boys from The Living End Ñnot to mention backing vocals from the grand dame of alt/country Lucinda Williams. This is an album that would appeal to your average Sheryl Crow fan, as well as the more traditional country slant of Gillian Welch. One of the album's highlights includes a rousing rendition of alt/country pioneer Gram Parson's "A Little Bit Lonesome." Barricades and Brick Walls gives country music the same kind of irreverent kick in the pants that is still being provided by Steve Earle, who is among her many enthusiastic fans.
