Malo is one of the great singers of our time. As the richly booming voice behind the Mavericks, he has carved his groove into the American landscape. But on Today Malo shows that his heart lies south of the border, giving us a lovely taste of his Latin and Mexican roots. Great stuff that reminds of Los Lobos and Santana's Emmy winning Supernatural. Many of these tunes are very Mexican and, at times, flirt with the kind of Mariachi stuff that might just about kill you if you woke up with a hangover in Tiajuana, but somehow it all works like magic. Among these bows to traditional Mexican and Latin influences, are a handful of the slow Orbison-esque ballads that are as moving as anything he's done with the Mav's. His duet with Shelby Lynne on "Two To Tango" is worth the retail price.
