Have you ever heard an album that was so awful, that it made you wonder if they weren't doing it on purpose for a laugh? Well, Sinnistar's Future Shock is a prime example. This album made me wonder how serious these guys take themselves or if there might be some hope that their tongue was at least somewhere near their cheek while recording such classics as album opener "White Noise," which sounded like a generic 80s hair-metal song with a Bon Jovi-like chorus. Or "Spaceman" ("Enter the spaceman, he's only half a man" repeated twice) or "Electric" ("I wonder why do ya, why do ya lie?" repeated twice).
There are a few songs that fool you into thinking you're in for actual quality only to have the rug pulled out from under you altogether. Case in point "First Day of Nowhere" which starts off half-way decent with its funky hip-hop beat during the verses only to have the singer chime in with such bon mots as "You're goin' nowhere and ya don't care," "if indecision is your religion...", and "Haunted" had a cool eerily droning guitar, but the stupid lyrics kicked in once again ("Under the bed, deep in your head, no longer dead, but are you awake?"). Pretty heavy stuff. Even "Drug Related" could have been a somewhat cool song if it wasn't for the embarrassing chorus, "Rules are made for breaking, it's so easy to see, now that you are wasted, what's it gonna be?"
Pretty much the only two songs that were listenable all the way through (and not necessarily even that great of songs) were the hard-hitting "Porcelain" and "Clear Plastic" (minus the annoying "hey, hey, heys"). If all this amusing mediocrity isn't you're cup of tea - perhaps you're into creepy and disturbing, which Sinnistar serves up in spades on the last song "Psycho Sexy." As the singer chants "Won't you please set me on fire?" a chorus of 10 year olds chimes in with some hearty "nah-nah-nahs" in the background - the perfect ending to one of those albums destined for the discount bin and perhaps the heart of some young nu-metal kid, who thinks it totally rocks - "besides it was only 2 bucks bro!"
