It's been six long years in waiting for Germany's The Notwist to follow-up their Glitch-Pop near masterpiece Neon Golden due to side projects galore (see Lali Puna, Ms. John Soda and 13 & God just to name a few) but finally the group has returned with The Devil, You + Me and it's every bit as good as one with high expectations such as myself could hope for.
The Devil, You + Me builds on the same formula that made Neon Golden such a huge hit in the Indie-Rock and Electronic music community. Soothing vocals by main man Markus Archer and cool synths and drum machines plus progressive electric guitar make for quite the awe-inspiring listen. First track "Good Lies" is a sweeping epic track that is a great lead off into other memorable songs like the dreamy "Gloomy Planets" and the icy "On Planet Off" which is dark and ominous in tone yet melodically intriguing nonetheless. Even a new trick like adding string arrangements to tracks such as "Where in This World" work out perfectly. If you didn't catch The Notwist six years ago at their peak now's the chance to hear what the fuss is all about because The Devil, You + Me gives Neon Golden some stiff competition for The Notwist's best album thus far.
